HASH

HOUSE

HARRIERS

Hash #521:   Sunday, December 26th - Boxing Day Hash

This Hash was hosted and hared by Barry at his house in Las Mercedes .  The run/walk provided everyone a chance to wear off the extra calories from Christmas dinner.  The potluck dinner which followed offered everyone a chance to get rid of any extra food from that same Christmas dinner (ha ha).

I have no pictures of the gathering or of the actual hash run/walk
... but luckily I do have some good post-hash pictures though!

One of the most fun things involved in hashing is the indoctrination of "virgins"...
... new people to the Hash get an honorary "down-down" to welcome them to the group.

As with most social groups, there are certain rules that need to be followed.  In the hash tradition, it is not allowed to wear new shoes without announcing it to the group beforehand.

The penalty of getting caught with new shoes is, well... not a pleasant experience...
for you or your shoes!

Another enjoyable event is the "christening" of an existing member.  After 5-10 hashes, a person attains a "Hash Name".  The name is assigned by the Mis-Management Committee, based on some interesting characteristic of the person.  Hint: Don't show any "weird" characteristics during your first few hashes, or you might get assigned a name that wil be hard to explain to your kids!

The "christening" routine involves receiving (if willing) a healthy mixture of flour & beer on your head ...followed by an announcement of your "Hash Name" (including the rationale of why it was chosen) ... and a traditional "down-down".

Unfortunately I don't know the reason for these aerobic drinks.

Sometimes the reasons for having to do a "down-down" are beyond explanation... but you can be assured there is always a good reason for having to do one!

Special thanks to Barry for Hosting & Haring a number of Hashes over the holiday season.

As we look forward to 2005, please think about hosting a hash of your own... contact any committee member if you are interested.
